Universal Pictures has just debuted the first trailer for Riddick, the upcoming epic action-adventure starring Vin Diesel, and it looks like everyone’s favorite criminal is getting back to his alien-slaying roots.

Riddick, the latest chapter of the gritty and fun franchise that began with 2000’s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (a screenwriter for Alien 3) and star/D&D geek Vin Diesel. Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy.

Left for dead on a barren planet, Riddick soon finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered.  The only escape is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries—including Battlestar Galactica’s Katee Sackhoff—who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their big payday.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. Can Riddick cheat death one more time?

Riddick hits theaters September 6, 2013. Visit www.riddickmovie.com for more info.

I liked the first two movies but this just looks like a remake of the first.

Feels more like a combination of the themes of the first and second films to me. I’m looking forward to it though, either way.

@5, It did feel that way, but I just hope it addressed WHAT happened to the necromongers.

@6: I think it does, to some extent. I know Karl Urban is in the cast, probably in a smaller role. But yay! Karl Urban!

Really excited about this. With the exception of the prison break scene, I wasn’t huge on Chronicles, though I’ve watched it twice. Love Riddick’s character, though.

I didn’t know they got Urban back, that helps, even if it is a smaller role(he’s a sorta big name NOW, whereas then, only Xena geeks knew him as someone other than Eomer)

Oh, I’d be surprised if Urban was in the movie for more than five minutes. But yeah, happy to have him in it for that much as a nod to continuity (and just because I think he’s a cool actor).

@9, OH I LOVE URBAN!! He’ll always be Cupid to me! The only thing that sucked about Dredd, was that Urban’s FACE isn’t in it.
